After playing French horn and piano in the U.S. Army, followed by years as a keyboardist and singer on the road and in the recording studios of RCA and Capitol, John resumed his college studies with majors in Theory/Composition and Music Education.

He has been teaching piano, organ, brass and theory for over thirty-five years and directs Kagan and Gaines' Jazz Ensemble.
